E. Armand, “Sentimentality” (1939)

Je lui ai murmuré des mots très tendres ;

Sentimentality

Because she was very young
I have spoken very sweet words to her
So sweet that I have felt her heart melt.
— Will not the wind of trials blow soon enough,
And soon enough will not the struggle for life carry off all: brain, heart, muscles and flesh? —
Because she was very young
I have spoken very sweet words to her.

Because she was no longer very young,
I have whispered very tender words to her;
So tender that her eyes were filled with tears.
— Has not the wind of trials blown strong enough,
Has not the struggle for life carried off enough: brain, heart, muscles and flesh? —
Because she was no longer very young
I have whispered very tender words…
