AVATAR n. m. (sanscrit avatâra). Avatar est le nom donné, dans l’Inde, aux incantations d’un dieu, surtout à celles de Vichnou. Par analogie, le mot avatar en est venu à désigner une transformation, une métamorphose. Ex : Les avatars d’un homme politique. Comme l’apostasie, l’avatar est une chose très courante en politique; quel politicien n’a pas eu ses avatars? Il suffit, en général, pour les provoquer, d’un manque d’argent, d’une chute de ministère ou d’un poste rémunérateur à obtenir. Ce sont là, en effet, des contingences qui ne sauraient laisser indifférent un politicien, et qui ajoute régulièrement un avatar de plus à son actif. Les anarchistes n’admettent pas les avatars en matière de politique, et savent les châtier à l’occasion. ( Se reporter à apostasie.)

By analogy, the word avatar has come to designate a transformation, a metamorphosis. Ex: The avatars of a political man. Like apostasy, the avatar is a very common thing in politics; what politician has not had his avatars? In general, a lack of money, the fall of a ministry or the chance of obtaining a profitable post is enough to bring them into being. These are, indeed, contingencies that could not leave a politician indifferent, and regularly add another avatar to his credit. The anarchists do not tolerated avatars in political matters, and know to chastise them when they arise. (Compare with apostasy.)
