Etimológicamente, Anarquía significa no gobierno.

Survey of the group “Los Iconoclastas,” Stuebenville

1. — Anarchism’s current problems, and the measures to be taken for provoking an international Anarchist effort in opposition to the authoritarian reaction.

This first point embraces two different themes, which we will deal with separately.

The current problems of anarchism. They are the ones that have always been since the appearance of Anarchism as an ideal to realize. Some has been sharpened, others offer more favorable solution. There are individual order and social order. The first are of an essentially moral character and are contracted to the need for the individual to act in concert with the ideal. Thinking as free men and acting as such is a capital problem that every anarchist must try to solve, because as long as he does not know how to combine thought with action, the main quality will be missing in order to convince by example and demonstrate the viability of his aspirations.

Of course the anarchists, like all men, are subject to the influences of the environment and of the inheritance; but if they really love the ideal, they must strive to avoid the influences of the authoritarian environment and the imperatives of the selfish, aggressive and violent character that is usually manifested in man by the ancestral drag and by the education received in childhood. It is convenient to start the revolution in the consciences, preparing the way for the material revolution. In addition, by training now in free life, there will be no danger of being two anarchists themselves an obstacle to the establishment of a libertarian society.

The problems of social order are several and of different importance. It can be subdivided into problems of near solution and remote solution. The most immediate to solve is that of the coordination of intelligence and forces. Anarchism is essentially an apolitical, international and revolutionary party, because of its purpose and its tactics, and this is so obvious that we refrain from reasoning. As such, it has the enemy of all governments, which agree to prevent or hinder its propaganda. To counteract the governmental action, there remains the resource to intensify the extra legal work of the groups, federating by regions or nations and establishing effective international relations. In normal time, the work to be done is mainly propaganda, attraction, cooperation and solidarity.

Apart from this internal action, there is a wide field for the external one, in the form of oral and written propaganda, within the cultural and recreational institutions, in the workers’ guilds, etc.

The action of the division of the anarchists in different schools, particularly the individualist and the communist, makes it difficult. The solution of this problem is to arrange the action about what constitutes the main purpose, which is common to everything; the free society without political and economic authorities that restrict freedom.

Anarchism, at present, does not constitute such a great force to attempt a revolution of its own. To provoke a libertarian revolution, knowing that it would fail, would be a waste of forces. But without provoking them directly, revolutionary movements can arise, through wars, strikes, crises, etc. and in that case the attitude of the anarchists must be of frank cooperation to the movement in everything that has as destroyer of the state-capitalist organization; and try, as far as possible, to create a state of affairs that is closest or favorable to the libertarian ideal.

Means to procure an international anarchist effort against the authoritarian reaction.

The authoritarian reaction now prevailing is a result of the more or less revolutionary state that occurred in several countries during and after the world war. In the face of danger, the bourgeois governments took extreme measures against the revolutionary elements, anarchists, trade unionists and communists, and to better act, in certain countries democracy was repudiated to throw itself into the arms of the dictatorship.

The anarchists, as opposed to any authoritarian form, have always been fought and persecuted, but, nowadays, under the rule of reaction, the persecution has intensified. At least one defensive action is imposed. But can anarchists, on their own, provoke an international effort against authoritarian reaction? It would be asaz risky to give an affirmative answer. Individual action is temporary and sometimes counterproductive, because it is not eliminating one or more men as a reaction can be overcome that responds to the mood of the entire ruling class and in possession of force. Collective action is more effective, in its dual material and moral aspect. And as it is a matter of combating a reaction that, in addition to being directed against the anarchists, reaches other social sectors, it is necessary to act in accordance with them in what refers to the transitory act of fighting the common enemy. A mere tacit agreement, that nothing commits or obliges.

There is, on the other hand, a sector, the trade unionist, with whom there is a more effective intelligence, because even if it does not pursue the same purpose, it is certain that it does not divide unionists and anarchists a question of principles. In addition, many are the anarchists who, in their capacity as wage earners, belong to a union.

The means to be used, of a moral nature, include the acerbic and tenacious criticism of the reaction and its actions, in the home, in the workshop, in the public centers and places; the publication of leaf, newspapers, brochures, etc., clandestine when it can not be done legally; the disclosure abroad, with respect to each country, of the reprehensible means used by the reaction.

The means of material order can be so many and of such a nature that it becomes difficult to enumerate them. Passive resistance, strikes, riots; conspiracies, insurrections, etc.

If all countries were to activate the use of these and other means, it would automatically result in international action. To make it more effective, it might be more convenient to hold an International Anarchist Conference especially called to study and arrange such an action.

2. — Anarchy as a principle of organization of societies, is it or is it not revolutionary?

Etymologically, Anarchy means no government. Politically, it refers to a society without imposed authority, in which its members all enjoy freedom, with no other limitation than mutual respect, economically, it implies a society without caste, class or personal privileges, which are always a cause of dependence on some individuals to others, with diminished freedom. Anarchy, as an ideal, pursues the establishment of a society based on free cooperation and the equality of its component individuals.

Similar society clashes openly with current society, based on the inequality of people and classes and political and economic dependence from one class to another.

There is, then, an irreducible antagonism between the current society and that which the anarchists long for. We cannot expect a peaceful transit, based on a mutual agreement, from one social system to another. Those who hold wealth and possess power, will never make voluntary abandonment of their privileges, nor those who aspire to social transformation can expect to convince with reasons. Consequently, there is no other way to reach a free and egalitarian society than revolutionary action.

This action does not refer exclusively to the use of violence. Ideas are in themselves a powerful force: moral force that is conquering consciences and preparing the path of violent revolution. In this sense, the mere fact of propagating the libertarian ideal is already a revolutionary action.

In addition to this moral action, indirectly, how many in literature, art, science and philosophy criticize institutions and beliefs that are predominant today, highlighting their injustices and errors.

Therefore, Anarchy, as a principle of social organization, is essentially revolutionary, as long as it is not realized, and once it is realized, it will lose its revolutionary character in what this word implies of violence, but it will remain an ideal of freedom open to all innovations that benefit the individual and society.

3. — Being a human idea, is anarchy proletarian or not?

Apply the proletarian word to the one who does not enjoy goods. The current society is divided into two classes: bourgeois and proletarians, that is, the class that owns all the goods and the class that does not own any.

Anarchy aims to suppress these two antagonistic classes to replace them with a single class of free producers. It is to be inferred that this unique class will possess assets in common.

The conclusion to be drawn is that Anarchy cannot be proletarian.

4. — What guidance should be given in the present to the children so that they can start their emancipation as soon as possible?

The question, as it is formulated, lends itself to confusion. We understand that what it is about investigating is the orientation that must be given to the generation that emerges so that it is in a position to conquer social emancipation.

We understand that what it is about investigating is the orientation that must be given to the generation that emerges so that it is in a position to conquer social emancipation.
If this is the meaning, the question is reduced to an education plan. An education that guides children towards society, the libertarian society, which frees them from the earliest childhood of fear of the unknown and violent authority; that does not imbue them with religious or patriotic concerns; that does not make them admirers of archaic traditions or slaves of brutalizing customs. You have to cultivate your personality in the sense of your own dignity and respect for your fellow man. You have to seek the health of your body as much as your mind’s.

But such an education is not in conditions to be received in bourgeois, religious or secular schools, where they are precisely educated in order to perpetuate in them the injustices and the prevailing errors. Nor can they obtain it in many of the homes, where misery, abandonment, indifference, ignorance and superstition predominate. The best means would be the creation of free schools. Groups could be organized exclusively dedicated to the foundation and maintenance of such schools, at the same time as working in the guilds of the unions and work centers to act in the same sense. Popular universities, Athenaeums and Social Studies Centers, can contribute to this educational work.

Do not forget, on the other hand, that the example in the home and the indications of the parents are of capital importance. Education starts at home and at home is perfected or maleated. It is up to the libertarian parents to orient their children on the path of emancipation, first with the example and then with the appropriate teachings.

5. — Why do the companions believe that art should be oriented in America and Europe to saturate more the atmosphere of anarchism?

Art, for the same reason that exalts feeling, can be a great auxiliary to the revolution. It can work in two ways: by exposing the social scourges and thus accentuating the desire to heal, or anticipating the beauties of the future society, encouraging us to realize it.

Unfortunately, and with some exceptions, artists, more anxious for profit than for glory, put themselves at the service of those who hold wealth, and their work, or is anodyne, or tends to enhance what should be the object of repulsion and censorship.

It is not art that should be oriented towards beauty and harmony, because the purpose of art is precisely beauty and harmony, and it can not be true art that tends to enhance ugliness and disharmony. The ones to be guided are the artists, who by selfishness, by agency of true ideality others, make art a servant of privilege and wealth. And this orientation must consist in the criticism of the works of the servile artists and in the exaltation of the works of those who feel and practice true art … As a stimulus for these, it would not hurt the periodic celebration of artistic and literary contests, sponsored by groups, athenaeums, work centers, unions, etc., in which the works that deserve it will be awarded.

6. — What concept deserve the individualist tendencies in the labor movement, at present?

In the labor movement, and more specifically, in the anarchist field, there is an individualistic tendency that considers the prerogatives of the individual over those of society.

In fact, all anarchists are individualists, since they start from the principle that man must enjoy complete freedom, without being subject to any authority. But we must not forget that the human being, by biological tendency, is a sociable being, that is, lives as part of social aggregates. The individual, within the society, is an autonomous being with a life of its own, that attends to the support of the collective organism, receiving in return the benefits that derive from the collectivity. There should, of course, be a correlation of services. In today’s society that correlation does not exist, benefiting a minority, with excess, of collective life, to the detriment of the majority. And it turns out that the privileged enjoy individual prerogatives that place them above society. This is precisely what must be avoided, establishing as the basis of society the freedom of all individuals in conditions of equality, without admitting dependencies, hierarchies or privileges that make freedom illusory.

The fact of voluntarily submitting to the individual to live in a free society, with the right to enjoy social benefits, imposes the duty to contribute, if able to do so, to collective work, otherwise it would become a parasite. privileged. In addition, the inalienable right enjoyed by respecting their freedom, implies the correlative duty to respect the freedom of others.

For all this, we consider a deviation the strictly individualistic criterion that pretends to ignore the tacit commitments imposed by collective life. The individualism of anarchists in general, since it is based on the realization of a free society, is essentially a societal individualism, even though it can be imagined in different ways, whether on the basis of cooperation, collectivism or communism, provided that freedom and the equality of individuals are guaranteed.

Pure individualism, taken to its final limits, would demand the isolated life of the individual, excluding all forms of society. This may be suitable for misanthropes, but for the vast majority of men, society will continue to be the natural extension and complement of individual life.

7. — What is the value of tradition and to what extent should it be followed?

The life of society, like that of individuals, is a succession of events. The individual, thanks to his memory, at any moment can remember the past, and this memory will produce different sensations, of pleasure or sorrow; but if he spent his life remembering, he would not live the present, nor would he try to improve the future.

In the villages, the tradition is like the memory of the past, an indirect memory, that reaches the present generations embellished or effeminate, and that we are rarely able to appreciate it in its proper sense. For this reason, the value of the tradition is relative and varies the way it is appraised, according to our ideality mentality.

The extent to which we follow the tradition will depend on our mentality. The mentality of the anarchist is not the most propitious to follow or respect the tradition. The anarchist, who is not happy with the present, is less satisfied with the past. The traditional is the archaic, the old, that when it comes to reproduce or perpetuate is a contradiction, because social life, as the individual, is movement, change, succession, transformation.

Tradition can only have a literary and historical value for us, but it can never be an ideal to follow. Our ideal is in the future, not in the past.

8. — To bury deeper and undo old beliefs petrified in the minds could the comrades tell the origin, bases and foundations of the Bible?

The word Bible, etymologically derived from the Greek, means books. The first Christians used it to designate the set of diverse books that make up the Old and New Testaments.

The Old Testament consists of a set of fragments of Hebrew books written at different times during the period of nine centuries before the Christian Era and that reflect the character; the beliefs and customs of said period, notwithstanding the different style, origin and purpose of said writings. Books of similar character have the ancient literatures of China, Persia and India.

The New Testament consists of four Gospels, which refer to the life, deeds and death of Jesus, whose real personality there is no conclusive evidence, and which had existed, was one of the many innovators that occasionally appear in the peoples, which give concrete form to vague aspirations that lie diffuse in the masses. The four Gospels were chosen by the Church from among a greater number of writings inspired by the real supposed existence of Jesus, of different authors.

At the Council of Trent, the Church chose the books that were to be considered “sacred and canonical,” which were 45 of the Old Testament and 27 of the New. Such was the origin of the current Bible, to which a certain number of men abrogated the faculty of declaring a divine book, dictated by God himself, through the Holy Spirit, who along with Jesus, constitute the incomprehensible unity-trine of Christianity.

The value of the Bible is purely traditional and literary. Its alleged sacred origin has been granted to it by the Church, with no other purpose than to rest in the mosaic of fragments that is the Bible, its religious doctrine.

The biblical narratives, in so far as they refer to an anthropomorphic God and to his creation of a limited world, are in open contradiction with current scientific knowledge; and the best way to combat their influence in the Ignatian masses is to vulgarise scientific knowledge and compare it with the beliefs that Christianity holds regarding divinity and creation.
